After weighing a lot of other Forest Park birthday dinner choices (process of elimination: is it baby-friendly???) we chose Old School. Ordered the awesome pulled pork. Can't wait. Uh, oh, the owner comes out and says they just ran out, can they substitute the brisket at the same price? The brisket was very good. The peach BBQ sauce, which is just perfect - a bit spicy, a bit gingery, on the sweet side - is a great complement. It's a sports bar, with lots of video screens, but there were families at other tables, enjoying the food. We felt comfortable. My 5-week old grandson slept through it all, woke up, had a bottle and was content. We'll be back. Only thing they're missing? Pie. Still no pie. ; ) Warm pie with a crispy crust, and a la mode, and you'll be back to five stars in our book. Really a great neighborhood place, pie or no pie.

We went there a few weeks ago and absolutely loved the food! They also have a large selection of craft beers! I also had a Moscow mule which was deeeelicious!! Everyone that worked there was very friendly and attentive! We had the pulled pork sandwich and a beef brisket sandwich that were awesome and the coleslaw is the best! Also had an heirloom tomato & asparagus salad that was to die for! Can't wait to go back and try some log the other menu items!

Good food, great prices, specials, and lots of good beer on tap. Friendly neighborhood spot, look forward to heading back and enjoying the beer deck and outdoor firepit.

The service was extremely friendly. The poutine was amazing. Their burgers are delicious. It's a bit out of the way from downtown Forest Park but definitely worth checking out. I may have found one of my favorite places in the area.

Nice drinks and patio. Food was not very good though. We didn't finish a single dish. Server was friendly though.

Went here for a Fantasy Draft and the staff was amazing. They accommodated all our needs (charging laptops, separate checks, etc) and were pleasant too. Nice big screens to view sports, good food (Pulled pork sandwich is a hit and the fries are insanely good) and a great beer list- both draft and bottle. I need to try the Pork Wings next time, but it would be great if they had chicken wings- that's the only thing missing!

I've been dropping by the Old School for the past year and it's a great place. The best way I can sum it up is you will feel better coming out than you did going in. Eating or drinking it's THE place to stop in at in the near western suburbs.

This is a neighborhood gem. Great food, great service, and a nice out door deck. Definitely a place to try.

I'm embarrased to say this, but as a "veteran" of the strip in FP, I've only just discoved this place recently... and I love it! Discovered this place last Fall when one of my co-workers who lives in OP wanted to meet up and watch the Bears play on Monday night. Years ago I was at the previous establishment at this location and was not impressed. So I guess I just wrote it off. He suggested this place so I thought I'd give it a shot. The place is right across the street from Submarine Tender (yum!) and has a pretty cool vibe to it. Old School reminds me of some of the bars in Bucktown: Unassuming but with a hint of hipster. It's pretty laid back with an outstanding beer selection (try the Old Chub in the can, trust me), decent specials and plenty of TVs to watch the game. The food is pretty good as well (good sandwhiches and apps). Nothing is going to blow you away, but it's a notch up from some of the bars on the strip. The staff is really nice and knowledgable about the beers they have which is always a plus when you don't know what you want. Been back a couple times since and it's just a cool place to hang out. Yeah it's a bit off the beaten path, especially if you are going out for a night on the strip. But IMO it's worth checking if you want to keep it low key for the night with some good beer and food. BTW this place has WIFI and is set up for Belly rewards so make sure you scan your card or with your smartphone.

Solid local grub and beer place. Went with kids. Ate inside and watched a few college games. French Dip w/lamb was decent--side potato salad is a must. Kids meals were meh? My spouse like the brisket, but not the best ever. We'd go back to drink beers and watch a hockey game with friends. Good crowd and vibe.

The food is outstanding. My wife and I love the food and the price is right. It also works perfect for going out for a few drinks and eats with friends. A must try!

My husband and I came here for dinner on a Friday night since we live closeby and always wanted to try it. No wait or line so it was pretty easy getting a table. Our waitress was nice. It was kind of warm inside, and the table felt sticky. Maybe it was just the interior but it wasn't as comfortable as how we wanted. It took a long while for our food to come.. we were pretty hungry. Maybe because it's a bar so food comes out slower? Not sure... my husband and I started with the chili cheese fries. It was good! It did take awhile for it to come out.. then after the fries came out, it probably took another 20-30 minutes before our main entree came out. Wish we got our food faster! My husband had their seafood pasta which he enjoyed. It was a big portion! I had their maxwell street pork chop..it was really good, too. Greasy but good. I asked for a side of potato salads....the potato salad was meh-it could be better. My husband agreed..didnt like the salad. We were both full by the end of our meal. Could've given a higher rating if our food came out faster. As for the customers, it seems to be an older crowd - late 40s-early 60s that were dining there when we were there.

This place is ripe for a second look from me. We went on a non-descript/slow tuesday night. It was slow, warm, and friendly. The location is fine, right off of des plaines. The foot traffic was light in lieu of the crowded bar kitty corner from this place. What I HAVE to tell you yelpers about - the brisket burger. Apparently on tuesdays they take brisket and mix it with ground beef and - BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE. Never had I known of such a marriage. I want this burger in my belly everyday until I die... but if I did have it everyday I would die - coronary artery disease. Anyway - get that burger now End of schizophrenic message

Been there four times and have fallen more in love each time. I'll admit, the first time I went there it was because they offer miles through United airlines frequent flier program if you are registered through that program. I honestly didn't think I could like a place at this location after experiencing the previous occupant (the creepy bar). But, I could not have been more wrong. I had their steak salad and LOVED it. Actually, I loved it so much I took my God-mother there for dinner the next week! While my husband complained about going to the same place twice in such a short amount of time... where did he end up the very next week on a bike ride? Their cute little side patio proved too irresistible for him. Then when I asked my God-mom out for dinner the next month, she wanted to return to this place! Last time I was there, I had the cold lamb sandwich while sitting on the patio drinking a Matilda - perfection! The warm night, cold sandwich combo was just what I needed. Plus the sandwich had a good amount of the sauce to add flavor but not overpower the lamb or yummy rosemary bread. I can't wait to return for a 5th visit!

You are going to get to the intersection in Forest park at Des Plaines & Washington and think this: Double wide in the middle of a neighborhood. OK, fair enough from the outside. Inside you are going to find a warm atmosphere, friendly staff, solid ambiance and great food. I've had the ox tail. I've had the jambalaya. I've had the brisket. It's all good. You will really like it. This is a great little neighborhood place that is populated by fun locals, but welcoming to all. The owner/chef feels like he is cooking for his friends, so just come and enjoy and you'll be a friend, whether you are local or not. Great assortment of beers on tap and an acceptable selection of whisky. Enjoy.

Discovered this place on an OP/FP bar crawl. Whoever runs the kitchen knows what the hell is up. Great food, reasonably priced. It's homemade and it shows, and it's a cut above any other bar food available in Forest Park. I have tried and adore the cold lamb sandwich, the Tuesday special meatloaf, and the steak salad. The potato salad is great and the tap list excites everyone. The patio is a great place to grab lunch and some rays.

Great beer choices. They carry Modelo, Coronas much more delicious older brother. Great bartenders always willing to talk beer and sports. Place is well run and clean. And the food is delicious! Had the cold lamb on ciabatta bread and it was the best sandwich I have had anywhere in Oak Park/RF. Overall chill spot, great service, and delicious food!

First time eating there this week with and group. Ordered the blackened grill chicken and two beers. Food was great. Got the bill thinking it was going to be high, was reasonable. Will be returning and recommending to others.

I'm glad some locals recommended this place because the outside isn't much to look at, maybe even on the shady side. The inside is comfortable, they have a good selection of beer, and the food is really good. The pulled pork sandwich is excellent - better than the expensive FP bbq joint. - and I like their cole slaw too. There are quite a few TVs so it's a good place to watch a game. We went for a day time game once and it was definitely an older crowd. When we went during dinner there were a lot of families. While the crowd isn't happenin' the food is and I will be back for it. Can't wait to try some of the other recommendations.

"sophisticated food in a casual atmosphere. a place where politicians and locals share cocktails and Oxtails". i like this place. its good. but ya know. i just cannot give it 5 stars because it's never been epic. it is a great bear spot and the food is good. the menus are well rounded. i wish the drink specials were a better, then i would be there more often.

Came here after work for a pre-holiday dinner/drink fest with some coworkers. I will return to this place for the sole reason that they carry my most absolute favorite beer. I say favorite beer even though I'm not really a beer drinker. It's the Ephemere green apple variety, for any interested parties. I'd never been in this place before. I rather enjoyed the predominantly wood interior and overall design. Small, yet not cramped. Homey, if you will. For some reason, I didn't think we were ordering food. I don't know why I thought we'd all show up here after a long day at work and just start drinking, but I did. I ordered the grilled portabella sandwich with roasted red pepper goat cheese spread with their potato salad which I found out was mustard (not mayonnaise) based. I don't go anywhere near mayonnaise. I'm historically not a huge fan of goat cheese and I don't think I would've ordered this had I not had a few beers in me already but I'm glad I did because it was really good and I didn't fixate on the fact that I was in fact eating goat cheese. If I had, I probably wouldn't have been able to eat it. I'm strange like that. I used to love carrot cake until I learned it's oft served with cream cheese icing. Now the mere thought if it makes me feel sick. Incidentally, this night was also trivia night. We stayed and played a few rounds, winning the first two. Unfortunately for my team, the prize was a free round of drinks and the more I drank, the louder I began yelling out the answers to the questions before noticing whether or not my team had even buzzed in. I apparently wasn't devoted to any one team, but rather as a "lifeline" for all of them. I'm definitely going back for another trivia night. It's something I've always wanted to do but was never already in the vicinity as it was going on. Next time, I'll know that incorrect answers deduct points just like in Jeopardy. I don't think I realized that until the next day.

Was pleasantly surprised when a restaurant in this location has succeeded. After visiting the 1st time, it was obvious, they have great "pub food", extensive draft beer selection and a friendly atmosphere. We have been back several times. Every time I have been there, I have seen people I know. That speaks volumes about how locals view this, family oriented tavern. Great value!

One of my weekly "go to" restaurants. Great food, attentive staff, comfortable ambiance. Portions are generous, food is tasty. Be adventurous and try the specials. Can't wait for the patio to open.

The bartender could be a tad nicer.... But the food is good. Daily deals on whiskeys and bourbons and food! Walking distance from center of forest park ! Would definitely go back for the fries and soup of day!

Great beer selection, laid back place, with stellar food for a tavern. Prices are reasonable (you pay way more for this sort of thing in Bucktown or the Village).

Well it's funny - after our first transcendent visit, we have been back twice and both times rather underwhelmed as we tried more menu items. It seems like there is not clear communication in the kitchen about ingredients.... We ordered a roasted beet salad that turned out mighty strange, and the bartender made a telling comment about how someone in the kitchen wasn't sure what was supposed to be on the plate. Yeah. Another time, I ordered a steak salad medium rare and a friend ordered the steak sandwich medium. They both came very medium and were very hard to cut/chew. I know, it's a bar, not fine dining - I am not sure how much it's fair to criticize a cheap steak for being a cheap steak. Hmmm. The beer selection at this place is really good, and it's a pleasant place to hang out. I'm going back - but I am going to order my food more carefully.

Nice and clean , looks to be a good crowd in there. Only minor complaint is there beer selection . They as many other bars in the area are really into the IPA beers. I have noticed when you order anything German in Forest Park or Oak Park the bartender looks at you like your from outer space. My faves are Spaten, Becks, Steigl and beers along that line. I must admit that the bartender did have Steigl but it was the flavored one not the regular beer (Steigl Weiss or Golden quite tasty). After having a few Guiness beers and talking with the bartender he did remember he did have Spaten Oktoberfest (another of my favs). Too late for me though as I ready to leave. I will be back, just wish that they would have some German beers on Tap!

Great beer. I had the pork shank ribs. Very good. But the five star review is because of the scallops and leek appetizer. The leeks stole the show. And the scallops were perfectly cooked.

My husband had first stopped in Old School with a friend and really enjoyed it, so we have gone two times since his initial visit. The first time we went with another couple and the second time with my son, who is 17. Everyone has enjoyed it. The appetizer of scallops and leeks is fantastic. I started with a delicious, fresh beet salad with goat cheese and nuts. My husband had the pork shoulder sandwich which was fantastic. The inside decor is like a comfortable, spacious bar. They have a nice outside patio, too. A great place for a night out with great food.

Went on a Friday night and it was surprisingly packed. There was a wait but the management did everything they could to accommodate us and get us seated ASAP. They seemed to really be hustling and attentive to the room, which was great. Good beer and cocktail list, including a sour ale on draft which was appreciated. Forest Park has many bars but very few that go beyond the barest minimum of Miller-Bud-Guinness. Hope to see them continue to keep the beer list up and evolving. I was less impressed with the food. Burger and fries were ordered as was pulled pork. The meat from all of the above was not to my liking, and the burger seemed like it was seasoned somehow or included an additive (perhaps for moisture) that made it meatloaf-y. The bun was good! Fries were way overcooked and dried out, which was a shame as they are fresh-cut. That could be a function of how busy they were, though. We'll go back to try other menu items as well as more beer. Just glad there's another place trying to serve craft beer in FP!

This location hasn't held onto a restaurant that worked in years, so I waited for a year after Old School opened before I visited. Pleasantly surprised by the interior, since the exterior is essentially a double-wide trailer with some nice trim. Comfortable, clean and friendly attentive service. Food quality was very good. Their touted brisket sandwich was a bit on the dry side and cut too thick for a sandwich presentation, but good quality and nicely seasoned, as was the lamb French dip sandwich. Both served with home-cut fries which were slightly limp but very flavorful. Mustard-based coleslaw was very fresh and tasty, but portion was small. Prices were very reasonable for the quality and amount of food served. I'm not a beer drinker, but if I was I' sure I would have given this place an extra star because their selection is pretty impressive. So, overall a good experience. I'll be back and will recommend it to friends. They get a lot more right then they get wrong.

This location has been a disastrous revolving door of businesses lately, but I hope Old School sticks around! I had the roasted gold beet salad...I didn't even know I liked beets until now! And the smoked chicken salad sandwich is perfect...the bread and the mustard are the perfect toppings and the smokiness of the chicken is really unusual and tasty. My husband had a burger special that was divine. They have a really unique selection of beers from small breweries and the staff seems really knowledgable about it...it's nice to get a good recommendation from a real beer drinker. I can't wait to go back!

TRIED to go here for dinner the other night for their shrimp boil. The flier said all you can eat shrimp, sides & PBR from 7:30-9:30. She called around noon to make reservations. We get there @ 8pm...bar full of white people(at this point, that's irrelevant). We wait to be seated. Manager asks if we're there for the boil. We say yes and we made reservations. He looks dumbfounded. Says there are no reservations and he's really sorry but they have no room. Reminder, it's a bar. He didn't tell us there was a wait or anything, just said no more room. After waiting around for a while, he finally found us a table. We sit, no one comes right away to wait on us then when we say we're there for the boil, the waiter says they have no more food(really??) so the manager comes back. He says he'll check with the cook but he's pretty sure there's no more food(mind you, it's 8pm). So of course he comes back. "Sorry guys we just don't have anymore food. And if we let you all have some, the other people will be mad because there's not much left" I said "well next time u should make sure and say it's 1st come 1st serve, not 7:30-8:30." We got up and left. They didn't offer any compensation. No "meal on us" "have a beer" NOTHING! Thing that made it even better is the 2nd waitress that came to the table (Asian) was like "oh you guys are here for the boil? Go ahead and get plates and help yourself. There's plenty" and when we told her he said there was no more food, she looked SO confused. Oh! And the cook came out to thank everybody. His toast was "to red necks, white sox and pabst blue ribbon" O_o Hate to pull the race card, but it was a bit obvious.

Good food, nice beer selection. My wife and I split the pork wings, which were delicious. I had the lamb sandwich and my wife had the heritage tomato BLT. Both were well executed and I look forward to trying other items on their menu. It is a casual nice bar with a well thought out gastropub influenced menu. Definately a welcome addition to the greater Forest Park area.

I just wanted to send a shout-out to Old School. We went there for dinner last night and loved, loved, loved the pork wings. The sauce was sweet and tangy. We also had an order of fries. The ketchup tasted unique (We couldn't quite put our finger on it, but it tasted homemade). Needless to say, the fries were devoured. We heard the shrimp boil was amazing and wanted to try it, but they had sold out...now we know to reserve our order ahead of time. Great staff (friendly waitstaff and chef) and the service was very prompt. The decor was collegiate and there were a number of big screen TVs. The restaurant/ bar was very clean. There's a great beer selection. I also tried a Ginger Beer Vodka drink in a copper cup (I can't remember the name, but it was awesome!...next time I'll have to have fewer so that I remember the name.)

Old School started out with the typical opening hiccups, but seems to have only gotten worse. We're locals and out of the 4 times we've gone this last time was - well the last time. Had to send back the Beer Braised Mussels because they smelled rotten, were swimming in what looked more like dirty dishwater than broth, and tasted like death. Swapped it out for the beet and goat cheese salad. A good combo but nothing more than the chef opening a jar of pickled beets, slapping down a hunk of goat cheese and throwing whole almonds and walnuts on the plate. Not even a bed of greens. BBQ chicken was good and juicy, but while the beef in the brisket sandwich had a good flavor it was dry as a bone. Hand-cut fries were good, but there has to be more than that. Inexperienced service is also to blame here. The chef is clearly clueless having let those mussels out of the kitchen and the waitress simply threw them away instead of taking them back to the chef. The table behind us ordered them and had the same issues with the dish. I couldn't help but tell them we'd sent them back too. Did the waitress take them back to the kitchen or to the manager when they sent them back? Nope! Back in the garbage so the next table can order them. I'm disappointed because I hate to see a restaurant in the neighborhood with such great potential struggle like this.

Had a great meal at Old School. Me and a buddy were looking for a place with some good food and brews and we weren't disappointed. The waitress recommended the brisket and boy was she right! We also split the pork wings which were great. Nice beer list, with some locals and rarely seen ones too. Not fancy, but a good place for what we were looking for.

Went with a friend that lives in the area for dinner and drinks last night. I like the atmosphere and decor. Also like the selection of beers. We each had a burger and they came as ordered. The service was good and so was the food. They have events happening every weekend so it seems to be coming along well. Worth checking out as I am a bit older than the crowd down on Madison ave. Will be back again to try other items on the menu.

Really enjoying Old School Tavern. I have eaten there twice. My favorite is the chicken salad sandwich. I really recommend it; it has a really good flavor and the carrot adds a nice crunch. It's a nice crowd on Saturdays for lunch and week nights for dinner. Really good neighborhood bar!

Upgrading by a star- we came here last night to have an outdoor patio dinner and were worried it'd be swamped, but for some reason it was totally empty! The entire time we sat on their lovely outdoor patio not one patron came to join us. I was worried that this would detract from service, but it did not in the slightest! Patty, our server was stellar at keeping our drinks full and making recommendations that were genuine when we wanted to hop around the beer and cocktail menu. I ordered a burger and added provolone and bacon to it. There was no skimping on the bacon or cheese, which was amazing. Their fries were super salty, but good and plentiful. I was a lot happier with this food choice today! Apparently their pork and brisket is popular, and they were all out of it when we went, which is a little unfortunate, but otherwise a super stellar visit! We had such a blast!

I went here recently with my boo and we bought the Groupon. I live close by and I've been wanting to go for awhile. We went in top grab some drinks after dinner. It was Friday night and the place was really empty. Even the patio. I think they're in a weird spot. That's the only reason I can think of as to why they were so empty. Any who,we ordered the beer of the month. It was a brewery I'd never heard of so I was excited to try it. They didn't have it. And the bartender said they hadn't gotten it yet and she didn't know when they would get it. I replied back that it was they beer of the month. She knew how crazy that sounded and apologized. We ended up ordering fries and a mint julep. Both we're pretty good. Was friendly but I kinda felt like I wasn't apart of the crowd. The bartender paid more attention to her regulars (as she should've) but it still felt weird. Their menu looked good so I will probably go back for dinner. But I was a bit underwhelmed overall.
